The Research Institute of St. Joe’s Hamilton understands the importance of investing in the future of research by providing funding opportunities for research personnel working at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton.

Interested applicants should review the Awards Program and Affiliation policies (see Related Resources below) prior to submitting an application. Please note that the type of awards and value for any given year will vary as they are dependent upon funding availability.

Applications are reviewed by the Award Review Committee, chaired by the Scientific Director, who also has final decision of the awarding of applicants.


Award Timelines

  • May 1: Official launch of the Achievement Awards competition
  • July 31: Deadline for Achievement Award nominations

McArthur Research Award: Deadline Extended to September 30, 2023

  • November: Award recipients announced at Celebrate Research

  • January 31: Letter of Intent submission deadline (for Studentship & Post-doctoral fellowship awards only)
  • March 1: Invitation for Full Application submission (for Studentship & Post-doctoral fellowship awards only)
  • April 30: Applications for all Project-Based Awards due by 11:59pm on April 30, 2023
  • July: Award recipients announced

Applications for the 2023 project-based awards are now closed. The 2024 awards session will open for applications on January 1, 2024.

Be sure to join us at our annual Celebrate Research event, where we will present the recipients of our project-based awards and achievement awards. In 2023, this event is being held during Learning Pillar Week.

Achievement Awards

Project-Based Awards

  • $10,000 to $25,000 grant per competition year
  • Progress report at 15 months, thereafter annually
  • Final report due upon project completion

  • Progress report after 12 months
  • Final report due upon project completion

    • Forensic Psychiatry Research Poster Presentation Award ($250)
    • McMaster Psychiatry Resident's Travel Bursary ($500)
    • Forensic Psychiatry Research Award for Trainees ($1000)
    • Forensic Psychiatry Conference Travel Bursary ($1000)
    • SJHH Forensic Psychiatry Program Research Award (internal: $2000; external: $2500)

  • $10,000 one-time grant
  • Final report due upon project completion

  • $18,000 per annum up to 2 years for Students enrolled in a MSc program; up to 3 years for Students enrolled in a PhD program.
