The Clinic – an innovation hub based out of McMaster University with a satellite location at St. Joe's – is making waves in the healthcare industry by providing health innovators with the essential tools, guidance, and education needed to propel their ideas forward. The Clinic offers a variety of programming, including the Health Innovation Bootcamp, led by an exceptional group of McMaster faculty. As health entrepreneurs themselves, this network of mentors shares a passion to engage with fellow health innovators to guide them through their entrepreneurial journey towards successful commercialization.
The Clinic @ Mac is located on the lower level of the Health Sciences Library within the McMaster University Medical Centre.
The Health Innovation Bootcamp – Summer 2023 Cohort
From June to July 2023, the Health Innovation Bootcamp’s summer 2023 cohort brought together a group of healthcare professionals, entrepreneurs, researchers, and students. Over six sessions, participants delved into their innovative concepts, validated their ideas’ commercial potential through weekly challenges, and took off on their journey toward entrepreneurship.
Beyond its main location at McMaster University, The Clinic extended its reach to St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton under the banner of “The Clinic @ St. Joe’s.”
The Clinic @ St. Joe’s is located in the Sherman Library at the Charlton Campus.
St. Joe’s Participants Shine in Health Innovation Competition
During the Summer 2023 Cohort, St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton was represented by three of our researchers and quality experts – Neil Bhattarai, Monika Malik, and Ashvin Moro – who presented their own innovative ideas at the Bootcamp pitch competition. Andriana Lukich, Director of Digital Solutions at St. Joe’s, attended the competition as a distinguished judge, lending her expertise in health informatics and digital innovation.
The presentations from St. Joe's participants included:
- Neil Bhattarai’s SafeBand proposed a novel patient identification solution that leverages RFID technology for enhanced safety, comfort, and hygiene compared to traditional paper wristbands.
- Ashvin Moro’s OrthoDB is a comprehensive database of musculoskeletal disorders, existing as a resource to improve the design, prototyping, and testing of orthopedic devices.
- Monica Malek’s Ortho Predict introduced an AI-driven predictive care model for osteoarthritis repair, holding significant promise in streamlining patient care and optimizing resource allocation.
Participants and facilitators posed for a group photo at the Bootcamp’s final pitch competition.
“The Clinic is building the next generation of health innovators and entrepreneurs through initiatives like the Health Innovation Bootcamp,” said Mackensey Bacon, Manager of Innovation and Partnerships at The Research Institute of St. Joe’s. “Anticipation is high as we look forward to the upcoming Fall Bootcamp.”
