Researchers from the Firestone Institute for Respiratory Health at St. Joe's have recently won a slew of awards.
CTS Poster Competition: ATS Conference, Dallas, Texas
The Canadian Thoracic Society (CTS) hosted its 9th annual poster competition during the annual conference held by the American Thoracic Society (ATS), an event that brings together respirology researchers and clinicians. This year’s ATS conference was held in Dallas on May 17 – 22, 2019. Several faculty members of the Firestone Institute attended the ATS conference to collaborate with colleagues from around the world.
Three Firestone researchers were named winners of the CTS annual poster competition. The winners include:
Josh McGrath, Winner of the James C. Hogg Basic Research Award, for his poster entitled “Inhibition of Nasal and Systemic IgA Responses by Cigarette Smoke Exposure in Mice.” McGrath currently works in the lab of Dr. Martin Stämpfli.

ERS Lung Science Conference: Estoril, Portugal
In March, 2019, yet another researcher represented Firestone’s excellence on the world stage – this time at the 17th Lung Science Conference, held in Estoril, Portugal.
Toyoshi Yanagihara won the Distinguished Poster Award at the Lung Science Conference for his presentation entitled “The Vascular-Parenchymal Crosstalk Regulates Lung Fibrosis through BMPR2 and CTGF Signaling.”
Dr. Yanagihara (MD, PhD) is a Japanese respirologist working to become an independent academic physician. He is focused on translational research in the field of pulmonary fibrosis, and currently works as a post-doctoral fellow at the Firestone Institute for Respiratory Health, in the lab of Dr. Martin Kolb. He has previously been awarded the 34th Inoue Research Award for Young Scientists.
The Research Institute congratulates all of our award winners for their efforts in showcasing the world-class talent of the Firestone Institute for Respiratory Health.
