According to an annual survey of research hospitals across Canada, St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton ranks among the nation’s Top 40 Research Hospitals, moving up one rank over the previous year. The rankings are published by Research Infosource and will appear in Canada’s Innovation Leaders 2021 in March 2022.

In addition to the overall rank increase, a marked improvement was also noted in research spending as a percentage of total hospital spending. In the medium-sized hospital category, St. Joe’s moved ahead from rank 7 to rank 5 over the previous year as research spending increased. In terms of research spending per investigator, the Hospital held its rank despite others disappearing from the leader board.

“Research is an investment in the health and wellbeing of our community,” said Dr. Lehana Thabane, Vice President, Research at St. Joe’s. “Our world-class scientists, new local partnerships, and growing laboratory infrastructure have helped our Hospital increase its research capacity, year after year.”

Data for Ontario hospitals are obtained from the Council of Academic Hospitals of Ontario (CAHO). The 2021 fiscal rankings are based on the 2020-2021 academic year.
