Prostate Cancer Prevention

There is no proven way to completely prevent prostate cancer, but there are some physical and social factors to control in order to reduce the risk of prostate cancer.

Nutrition: Consuming a diet lower in fat, including red meat, charred meats and processed meats may reduce your risk of prostate cancer. Also, including vegetables high in sulphur like cabbage, broccoli, brussel sprouts, and cauliflower in your diet as well as omega-3 can be protective against prostate cancer. There has been some evidence that obesity may increase the risk of prostate cancer, a healthy diet it would be beneficial in decreasing the risk of obesity and prostate cancer.

Medication (5 – alpha reductase inhibitor): A medication called 5 – alpha reductase inhibitor has been tested in two large studies and shown to reduce the risk of prostate cancer. There are two inhibitors called dutasteride and finasteride which are available and are used to treat men with symptoms of BPH (enlarged prostate gland).  You can discuss the use of this medication with your physician to see if it may be appropriate for you.
