Lehana Thabane has been appointed the acting chair of the Department of Health Research Methods, Evidence, and Impact (HEI) of the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University. His four-month term began on July 1, 2019 as the selection committee determines the next chair.

Thabane is a professor of HEI and an associate member of the departments of pediatrics and anesthesia. He is also the director of the Biostatistics Unit at the Research Institute of St. Joe's Hamilton, and a senior scientist at the Population Health Research Institute (PHRI). He has served as associate chair of HEI since 2009.

“He is well-suited to fill the role of acting chair, having served as associate chair of the department since 2009,” noted Dr. Paul O’Byrne, Dean and Vice-President, Faculty of Health Sciences.

Thabane has described himself as a "practical methodologist rather than a statistician" in the Research Institute's 2018 Annual Report. Thabane has estimated that he and his team at the Biostatistics Unit have collectively visited nearly 50 countries to develop high quality studies or to build biostatistics capacity in institutions of higher learning. The significance of effective study design has led to their work being recognized around the world.
