St. Joe’s Researchers Investigate How Probiotics Affect Mental Health
Researchers working at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton have led studies that show the connection between the brain, the nervous system and the gut. Dr. John Bienenstock and his research team have demonstrated how certain probiotic bacteria can treat anxiety and depression in mice models.
Dr. Valerie Taylor is now working to translate the findings of our researchers to determine if probiotics can be used to treat patients with bipolar disorder.
Along with being the Chief Psychiatrist at the Women’s College Hospital, Dr. Taylor is also the Director of the Bariatric Surgery Psychiatry Program at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton.
Dr. John Bienenstock and Dr. Valerie Taylor offered their comments on the link between probiotics and mental health on CTV News last night.
