Featuring Dr. Lawrence Mbuagbaw, a Research Methods Consultant and Clinical Epidemiologist.  Dr. Mbuagbaw is an Associate Professor in the Department of Health Research Methods, Evidence and Impact, McMaster University and the Director of the Biostatistics Unit at St Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton. He is a member of the Ontario Hospital Association's Antiracism Taskforce, Co-Chair of FHS Community of Practice for Inclusive Teaching and contributes to research efforts to address health disparities in ethnic minorities.

We hear a lot about how it’s important to be a good ally to people who have historically been marginalized. But what does allyship actually look like, and how do you do it effectively? Join us to talk about why good allyship is more important than ever, and learn practical allyship strategies that focus on increasing knowledge, supporting the person being targeted, and building your own allyship skills.

Jaleesa Bygrave (she/her), RSW, MSW,  is  the clinical lead for YouThrive, a mental wellness program for Black, Indigenous and racialized young persons experiencing racial stress and/or trauma. She has been a part of the program since its inception in March 2021 and provides individual and group-based clinical services for Black, Indigenous and racialized folks experiencing racism in work, school, and community; intergenerational trauma; internalized racism, etc. In addition, she also offers consultation services to mental health service providers looking to increase their capacity to provide culturally affirming, adaptable services to Black, Indigenous and racialized young persons. Prior to this role, Jaleesa has worked in corrections, child welfare, HIV and AIDS care, community development/engagement. 

Lisa Jeffs (any pronoun) started in the new role of Senior Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Consultant at St Joe’s in April 2023. Prior to that they were in management roles in the Mental Health & Addictions Program at St Joes with experience at the Cleghorn Clinic, the Youth Wellness Centre, and the Eating Disorders Clinic. At the Youth Wellness Centre, Lisa developed and implemented services designed by and for clients from historically marginalized groups. Lisa has a B.A. (Hons) in Sociology and Women’s Studies from Western University, and a Masters of Education in Counselling Psychology from OISE/UT.

In this design thinking workshop led by Dr. Robert Fleisig, Associate Professor at the Walter G. Booth School of Engineering Practice and Technology, healthcare professionals, learners, and researchers will gain profound insights into the world of healthcare innovation and how it intersects with engineering. The session will emphasize empathy, interdisciplinary thinking, and creative problem-solving as key elements in understanding and addressing healthcare challenges. Participants will collaborate within the group to encourage collaborative ideation and the creation of innovative concepts. Case studies of projects from the Healthcare and Engineering collaborative between St Joe’s and the W Booth School, will be highlighted during the session.

Dr. Robert Fleisig is an Associate Professor in the Walter G. Booth School of Engineering Practice and Technology (SEPT) with a passion for inspiring empathy, creativity, and interdisciplinary thinking. Robert has taught more than 10,000 undergraduate students and has impacted students across three faculties, local organizations, researchers, and a broad range of companies. His current scholarly interests reside in reimagining university teaching for teaching-oriented faculty from the perspective of a design thinker. In 2018 he was awarded the prestigious Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations (OCUFA) Teaching Award and named a Fellow of the Canadian Engineering Education Association (CEEA-ACÉG) in 2022. He is currently a Co-Editor for the International Journal for Students as Partners and program lead for the Master of Engineering Design in SEPT. Robert is  a co-chair of the Healthcare and Engineering collaborative between St Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton, The Research Institute of St Joe’s Hamilton and the Walter G. Booth School of Engineering Practice and Technology at McMaster University.

"Learning About Interprofessional Research: Perspectives from Recent Recipients of the Professional Advisory Committee Interprofessional Research Award Program (PAC IP)"

In this facilitated panel discussion, recent recipients of the PAC Interprofessional Research Award (PAC IP) will share various aspects of their funded research projects. The PAC IP is an annual competition supported by The Research Institute to support research teams, including those involving novice researchers. Following a brief description of each participant’s project, the discussion will centre around themes related to: experiences sharing and disseminating results (e.g. journal articles, presentations), learnings around interprofessional aspects, how the PAC IP award has helped with professional development related to research in an academic hospital centre, how the PAC IP may have offered opportunities for learners, and reflections on how the PAC IP research award has helped shaped the question “what’s next?”.

Dr. Joseph Pellizzari (facilitator) is the Professional Practice Lead for Psychology and Chair of the Research Committee for the PAC.

Dr. Jenna Boyd is a clinical psychologist with the Anxiety Treatment and Research Clinic.  Her PAC IP award focussed on the development of a novel treatment for post traumatic stress disorder.

Dr. Emily MacKillop is a neuropsychologist with the Centralized Neuropsychology Service. Her PAC IP award focussed on the study of treatment outcomes for services in acute psychiatric units.

Dr. Taylor Hatchard is a manager in the MHAP. His PAC IP award centred on the development and evaluation of a group intervention geared towards alleviating mental health disparities of transgender and gender diverse youth.

This hour-long session will offer participants a primer on getting started in health professions education with a focus on commonly used quantitative methods including surveys; experiments and quasi-experiments; and prospective and retrospective data reviews. By the end of this session, participants will be able to: (1) describe what kinds of research questions are best suited to quantitative designs, (2) understand the key elements of common quantitative methods, and (3) begin to apply the principles of what they have learned to their own scholarly projects. We welcome participants of all backgrounds to the session, especially those who are new to health professions education research.

St. Joes Healthcare Hamilton deeply appreciates and believes that the role of the caregiver/support person should be part of the patient care team to support the patient and the team achieve a better experience.

The important role of family caregivers as partners in care is grounded in the growing evidence that demonstrates their presence has a range of benefits to care, experience, safety and outcomes, This includes: 

  • decreased patient anxiety during procedures 
  • improved medication adherence, maintained cognitive function in older adults and prevention of falls 
  • improved accuracy and quality of shared information  
  • improved transitions and understanding of discharge instructions  
  • lower readmission rates 

COVID-19 has magnified the importance of the family, caregiver/support person and their essential role in patient wellbeing and care. 

Goal of this Program: Standardize the Essential Care Partner role across the organization and integrate the role into the care team to better support the patient and their care.  

Speakers:

Hélène Hamilton has been an advisor at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton since 2011 when she started in General Internal Medicine. In collaboration with staff and leaders, Hélène made many great changes that impacted patient care, such as the communication boards, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease care, discharge planning, Essential care Partner, Co-design, staff orientation and many more. She joined the Patient and Family Advisory Council, in 2015 and in 2018 became the co-chair of the council. Hélène led the Patient and Family Advisory Council with passion and commitment. She partners with leaders and staff to make changes for better patient, family, care giver and staff experience. During the Pandemic, Hélène influenced the way our advisors are engaged at the executive leadership. We now have two advisors in all 6 executive leadership teams including the pandemic operations team. She mentors new advisors and leaders to achieve excellent partnership and she is the co-lead of the development and implementation of the Essential Care Partner Project. Over the years Hélène has sat on numerous community/regional/provincial boards and always strives for the advancement of better care, equity, diversity, and inclusion.  

Valentina Constantinescu has been leading the Patient Experience and Engagement program at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton since 2013. Before that she was an Educator at Joseph Brant Hospital and a Project Lead at Hamilton Health Sciences. In 2014, she was the recipient of a Collaborative Initiative with Canadian Foundation of Healthcare Improvement that aimed to improve the discharge process through partnering with patients and families. In these roles she influenced many policies and procedures focused on patient centered care and nursing excellence. Valentina is a healthcare leader with passion for excellence and a strong commitment to improve patient families, caregivers and staff experiences and the quality of care and services.

The existence of, and easy access to, generative AI systems, such as ChatGPT and similar tools, are impacting teaching and learning and our work more generally. In this talk, Professor Susan McCahan will start by briefly reviewing how these systems work and their capabilities. This is intended to create a shared literacy about this technology so we, as a community, can have informed conversations about the implications. McCahan will also share how the institution is responding to these emerging technologies and strategies that instructors are using to support their teaching goals. This is particularly relevant to the ways we assess learning in this new environment. There will be time at the end of the session for discussion. This talk is relevant for both faculty and staff.

Description

Access to high quality, well-annotated patient specimens is essential for basic cancer research and the development of precision oncology strategies to apply in the clinic. St. Joseph’s Hospital Hamilton (SJHH) has been a partner of the Ontario Tumour Bank (OTB) at the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research for more than 10 years.   To date, more than 20,000 participants with over 30 types of cancer have been recruited to OTB including more than 5,000 patients at the SJHH site. The objective of this presentation is to illustrate how quality samples and data from OTB participants, including from SJHH, are used to support oncology studies led by researchers in Hamilton, across Ontario and beyond to make the next generation of discoveries.

Description

This one-hour presentation offers St. Joe’s healthcare professionals and researchers an introduction to the critical concepts of Intellectual Property (IP) and Commercialization and how to collaborate with McMaster University Liaison Office (MILO). Key topics will include an in-depth understanding Intellectual Property (IP): Participants will gain insights into the various forms of IP, such as patents, copyrights, and trademarks, and learn how to protect their innovative healthcare ideas, research, and technologies. There will be a specific focus on how to commercialize virtual reality applications at St. Joe’s and The Research Institute.
