Dr. Michelle Kho, a clinician-scientist in the Physiotherapy Department at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton, has been elected as a Member of the Royal Society of Canada’s College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists.
Launched in 2014, the College is Canada’s first national system of multidisciplinary recognition for the emerging generation of Canadian intellectual leadership. Membership consists of mid-career leaders who provide the Royal Society of Canada (RSC) with a multigenerational capacity to help Canada and the world address major challenges and seize new opportunities including those identified in emerging fields.
Dr. Kho, who was recently promoted to Professor in the School of Rehabilitation Science at McMaster University, studies complex rehabilitation interventions to improve outcomes in critical illness survivors.
In collaboration with the Canadian Critical Care Trials Group, Dr. Kho led CYCLE, the largest randomized clinical trial of early in-bed cycling in mechanically ventilated patients. She is also co-leading REVIVe, a 900-patient national study of frailty, rehabilitation, and outcomes in critically ill adult and pediatric survivors of COVID-19 and acute respiratory infection. Her research is funded by agencies including the CIHR and the Canadian Foundation for Innovation.
“I’m delighted to join the RSC College of New Scholars, Artists, and Scientists,” said Dr. Kho. “I look forward to sharing the crucial importance of rehabilitation to help enhance the quality of life of Canadians.”
Founded in 1882, the Royal Society of Canada comprises the Academies of Arts, Humanities and Sciences, and the College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists. The RSC recognizes excellence, advises the government and the larger society, and promotes a culture of knowledge and innovation in Canada and with other national academies around the world.
“Congratulations to Dr. Kho, for this incredible honour,” said Dr. Lehana Thabane, Vice President, Research at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton. “This is a clear acknowledgment of her scholarly excellence and distinction!”
