Canada’s Top 40 Research Hospitals 2024 – an annual ranking and review of research hospitals published by Research Infosource, has ranked St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton in first place for hospital research spending growth among medium-sized hospitals.
This first place ranking reflects an increase of nearly 31 percent in research spending over the previous year, garnering a spot in Research Infosource’s winners circle. In 2023, St. Joe’s ranked fifth place in this category.
The nominal “Top 40” ranking surveys all Canadian hospitals regardless of size. Among all hospitals, regardless of size, St. Joe’s held its previous rank of 22nd overall.
For a clearer picture of the health research landscape, recognizing the size differences between Canada’s research institutes, Research Infosource also breaks down the data into three size categories: large, medium, and small hospitals.
Among medium-sized hospitals, St. Joe’s moved ahead one spot to 4th place in two categories: researcher intensity (average funding per investigator) and hospital intensity (research funding as a percentage of total hospital funding).
The 2024 rankings, which were released earlier today, are available online and will be published in the Friday, December 6 edition of the National Post in the GTA, Montréal, and Ottawa. They are part of a publication by Research Infosource called Canada’s Innovation Leaders, which also includes rankings on Canada's Top 50 Research Universities and Top 50 Research Colleges.
Data for Ontario hospitals are obtained from the Council of Academic Hospitals of Ontario (CAHO). The 2024 rankings are based on the 2022-2023 fiscal year.
